ABOUT LISTVYANKA

Listvyanka is a rural settlement in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia. It is situated about 70 kilometers south of Irkutsk, close to where the Angara River exits the lake and begins its northward path. Listvyanka is accessible by public bus or ferry from Irkutsk. Its population is about 1,900.

Despite its modest size, Listvyanka is one of the busiest tourist locations in the whole of Siberia. Because it is so close to Irkutsk, it sees more visitors than all other towns and villages on Lake Baikal combined – particularly weekending Irkutians and foreign tourists. Other Russian travelers sometimes prefer wilder places. It is not over-developed yet, but slowly becoming so. It has a tourist-oriented economy: there are markets, picnic areas, and lots of hotels and cafes.
